Khambhalida Caves Tour

About 75 kms away from Rajkot, there is a small village called Khambhalida situated at the end of GondalTaluka and is nearer to Junagadh. Near this small village, surrounded by hills and small river, there is a historical piece of sculpture which has archeological importance as well. There are 1700 to 1800 years old, invaluable, historical Buddhist Caves situated near the Khambhalida village which gives holy and peaceful feelings. The 1700 to 1800 years old delicate carving of the caves makes the stone a live, today also. Shri P.Pandya, the great archeologist of India and the then Superintendent of Archeology and Museum Department of Gujarat State, who spend his life in search of archeological monuments in Saurashtra, discovered these precious caves in 1955. He discovered about 200 such type of places in Saurashtra.

These Buddhist Caves are situated near Khambhalida village over small hills, between dance forest and in the bank of a small river. Nobody can trace out while passing through the mountain that there may be such type of beautiful Buddhist caves near the bank of river. One has to get down approaching the caves. These caves may be made, at that time, near the bank of river considering the need of water. These caves were made out of carving a big slab. There is different type of three caves. Cave in center is wonderful due to its sculpture. There are two big sculptures on the two main sides of caves which had been carved from one big stone whose height is about 8 to 10 feet. It is believed that this caves had been made by saint of Dinyan branch of Buddha tradition.

Near to these caves, there are 15 small caves situated. Standing in front of caves, the cave at left side is very big which is open. This cave is open in front side but very dip in inside. There is sufficient light and air in daytime in this cave. Near to this cave there is another cave which is connected with the left side cave. At the left side of this cave, there is Ancient statue of Lord Krishna.

Before so many years, Gir Forest was up to Khambhalida village which was full of Asiatic Lion. It is a legend that there was underground way from these caves to Junagadh, were an inscription on a stone of Ashoka exists. Hence it is believed that Buddha Saints were coming from Junagadh to these Caves of Khambhalida, for meditation.
